The Benefits of Sisal Flooring
Sisal is one of the most popular flooring options here at Coverings Sunshine Coast and with good reason. Lending a relaxed elegance that is contemporary yet classic, Sisal is not a flooring trend: it is a stalwart of style. Not only does it fit beautifully into the Coastal interior design aesthetic, it is completely natural, sustainable and incredibly versatile.
What is Sisal?
Sisal is a stiff fibre constructed from the leaves of the Agave Sisalana cactus (also the source of tequila!) The leaves are spun into a yarn-like material and can then be dyed into a variety of colours. Sisal is often used for rope and twine, so it’s very durable.
Tough and Durable Sisal
Made from 100% natural fibres, sisal is designed to be tough and durable. As one of the strongest natural fibres available, it can withstand heavy foot traffic, especially in areas like entryways, steps and hallways. Over time, a sisal covering will soften, but it won’t lose its beautiful natural look. Unfortunately, sisal is not stain resistant, so it’s probably best not to use it extensively in areas such as the kitchen or bathroom.
Sustainable Sisal
Sisal fibres come from the leaves of the Agave Sisalana cactus, which has been grown on plantations in East Africa, Asia, Central and South America for centuries. Approximately 1,000 fibres are extracted from a single leaf, and with a two year maturation rate and eight to twelve year harvest life, it is relatively quick to grow and replenish. At the end of its life, the entire plant is put to use either to feed farm animals or produce electricity (in one example from Tanzania).
Eco-Friendly Sisal
Perhaps most appealing however, is that despite it’s tough and durable nature, sisal is also completely biodegradable. Safe in the knowledge your new flooring won’t become a permanent part of landfill when it does eventually wear out, sisal is an obvious choice for the environmentally conscious.
Beautiful Sisal
Although natural weave has always been popular in coastal homes, the versatility of sisal goes far beyond a limited palette of creams and beige. Not only that, it’s natural look can be juxtaposed against a striking weave, creating interest and texture in the neutral designs so often used in Hamptons and coastal styling. This versatility is perhaps sisal’s greatest strength, and it’s easy to become overwhelmed with the choices on offer. Come into the Coverings Sunshine Coast showroom for a closer look and more personal advice from our team of experts on what will look best in your space.
Versatility
With a wide variety of colour, weave size, style and application options, the versatility of sisal is naturally unparalleled. We can install wall to wall or custom cut into rugs to enhance any space.
Practicality
Sisal rugs are long lasting, water absorbent and can act as a room humidifier in dry conditions. However, sisal maintains its look best when not exposed to areas where splashing or staining is likely to occur, such as kitchen or bathrooms. Vacuuming is often enough to keep sisal looking fresh and clean.
Health Benefits
This natural fibre emits very low levels of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), a variety of chemicals that pollute air quality and can cause adverse health effects. This makes it a popular choice for those with allergies. Sisal also has antimicrobial qualities, especially against E. coli.
