LET'S TALK ABOUT CARPET

CARPET

Choosing the right flooring is crucial to your home or investment property, carpet can be the element that creates the right foundation to any beautiful space.

With so many flooring options out there it can be hard to know what is right for your home or investment property. Carpet has come a long way in recent years, making it another great choice to settle upon. Traditionally carpet was not a great option for a home with pets or children, nor rental properties as it was hard to maintain and ruined easily. This is no longer the case. With the rise of technology we now have treatments and features that produce a range of carpets to suit particular installations.

Have A Yarn

First lets take a look at the different kind of yarns and what each one's benefits and uses are:

CARPET

Wool

Favoured for its natural beauty, there is no other fibre like pure wool. Naturally stain resistant and flame retardant, it's soft but tough. Wool creates a warm, cosy environment making it a great option for family homes. With a low - medium maintenance rating wool will last a lifetime, however the price tag leave this option a high-end product.

CARPET

Nylon

Durable and stain resistant, it is the fibre for busy homes with children, pets or high foot traffic. It has a low maintenance rating and hundreds of design and texture options available making it a great choice and mid-range budget friendly.

CARPET

Polypropylene

Highly stain and moisture resistant this durable synthetic fibre is great for a budget friendly option. With low maintenance care, it doesn't rate quite as good as nylon in terms of wear and tear but it still a great option for homes with children and pets.

CARPET

Polyester

Known for its luxurious look and feel, this man-made fibre is great value for mid range budgets. Not quite as durable as nylon, it is mostly recommended in lower foot traffic areas such as bedrooms and studies. With hundreds of textures and colours available the design options are endless.

Pile On

Pile refers to the fabric loops within your carpet which make up the soft surface and determine the texture of the outer layer. There are four types of pile:

Twist

Twist is the most popular pile constructed. The fibres are twisted together to make a strong, durable carpet ideal for high foot traffic and easily maintained.

Loop

The loop pile means the fibres are left uncut and looped through the top layer creating a softer, more bouncy feeling underfoot. This is often used with natural fibres such as wool.

Plush

Plush is the softest pile, it is cut to a smooth level height. This creates a luxurious shimmering effect and is great for man-made synthetic yarns.

Woven

Woven piles are a traditional method that is not widely used today. However you can still find it in high-end carpets. The yarn can be woven into patterns called Axminster.

Decision Time

Choosing the right carpet for your home will depend greatly on your overall budget (remember install and prep costs when creating a budget) and your household needs. If you are wanting to choose carpet for an investment property, you may wish to go along the lines of a twist pile, polypropylene blend which will be minimal maintenance and budget friendly. However if you are looking for a lush carpet to have underfoot in bedrooms you may wish to go for the luxurious wool in a loop pile.
