Eco Friendly Sisal Carpet Sunshine Coast
MAKE THE HEALTHIER CHOICE WITH SISAL
Sisal carpet imparts natural beauty to a space with durability, versatility and environmental sustainability
Made from natural plant fibres with little industrial interference, sisal carpet is a beautiful and eco-friendly way to introduce natural elements to your interiors. Tightly woven or chunky weaves, neutral or bold colours, with or without backing and cut to fit almost any space, it’s no small wonder sisal is one of Coverings’ most popular flooring options.
What is Sisal?
Sisal fibres are obtained from Agave Sisalana, a native cactus of Mexico, though it is now also grown throughout Africa, Asia and South America. A hardy plant, Agave Sisalana grows well all year round in hot and arid regions which are often unsuitable for other crops. It is relatively simple to grow, is resilient to disease and requires little input up to its cultivation point, making it a very sustainable crop. Sisal can be harvested from two years after planting and has a productive life of up to twelve years. Each plant can produce 180-240 long leaves, which are processed with minimal wastage into durable fibres.
top 3 benefits of sisal
Durable Sisal
Sisal is one of the strongest and most durable natural fibres on the planet and has long been used in rope, bags and flooring. The fibres are extremely tough, absorb moisture and with proper care, will not ‘shed’. Sisal’s kryptonite also lies in its ability to absorb: stains from pets and children are difficult to remove. Positioning sisal rugs and carpet tiles in high foot traffic areas will create a beautiful look and provide years of hard wearing durability. However, we recommend steering clear of sisal installations in bathrooms, kitchens or any other ‘high-spill’ areas.
Versatility
Sisal comes in a wide range of textures, weaves and colours to suit your particular style and needs. It is just as stylish as an entranceway feature, installed on stairs, bedroom floor or as an oversized statement piece in your living room. Sisal can be easily cut to size.
Environmental Benefits
Sisal is an eco-friendly superstar, with some suggesting its use can form part of the overall solution to climate change:
Absorbs more carbon dioxide than it produces.
Grown without excessive water usage in hot, arid climates in sandy and or nutritionally poor soils.
Generates mainly organic wastes and leaf residues during processing.
Waste can be used to generate bioenergy, produce animal feed, fertiliser and ecological housing material.
Finished product is 100 percent biodegradable.
Sustainable and environmentally responsible, once the life of your beautiful sisal carpet has ended, it will not end up in land fill but compost safely back into the earth.
Natural Chic
Regardless of the particular weaves or colour chosen, the beauty of sisal as a natural element in your space is pivotal to attaining that Coastal Hamptons look. Thick and chunky weaves can add interest and a luscious texture to a room, whilst tight, more elegant weaves will add a level of comfort to the natural aesthetic. A wide variety of colours are available, with darker weaves a sensible choice for high spill areas.
Hypoallergenic and Antimicrobial Sisal
As a natural plant fibre processed with little chemical input, sisal remains one of the best options for those with allergies. All natural fibres shed, but the strength of sisal drastically diminishes this compared to others. With regular vacuuming to control ambient dust, allergen sufferers can rejoice!
Sisal also has antimicrobial properties, containing active ingredients scientifically proven to inhibit the growth of E-coli and Bacillus stearothermophilus, making it another outstanding choice for those with children and/or pets.

Frequently Asked Questions About Sisal Carpets on the Sunshine Coast
-
Sisal fibre carpets, popular for their natural and durable properties, offer several potential health benefits as well as helping your floors look better for longer. If you’re a Sunshine Coast homeowner who wants a beautifully natural floor covering, here’s what’s waiting underfoot:
Allergy-friendly: Sisal carpets are hypoallergenic, making them an excellent choice for individuals with allergies or sensitivities. Unlike synthetic materials that can trap dust, pollen, and pet dander, sisal does not accumulate as many allergens, thus reducing the risk of allergic reactions.
Air quality improvement: Sisal fibres are natural and do not release harmful volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into the air, unlike some synthetic materials that can emit toxins. By using sisal carpets, you can help maintain better indoor air quality, which is particularly beneficial for those with respiratory conditions or sensitivities.
Moisture regulation: Sisal has a unique ability to absorb and release moisture, which can help regulate humidity levels in your home. By maintaining appropriate moisture levels, sisal carpets can contribute to a healthier indoor environment and reduce the growth of mould and mildew.
Non-toxic and eco-friendly: Sisal carpets are made from natural plant fibres extracted from the agave plant. They are free from synthetic materials, chemicals, and pesticides commonly found in other types. Choosing sisal carpets promotes a more environmentally friendly and sustainable lifestyle.
Thermal insulation: Sisal carpets offer natural thermal insulation, which can help to keep your home warm during cooler months. By reducing heat loss, they can contribute to energy efficiency and potentially lower heating costs.
Durability: Sisal carpets are known for their strength and durability. They can withstand heavy foot traffic without showing significant wear and tear, making them a long-lasting option. This durability reduces the need for frequent replacements and minimises waste, which is beneficial for both your health and the environment.

The choice between sisal and seagrass comes down to your specific needs and preferences. Both sisal and seagrass have their own unique qualities and advantages, so the “best” option is really the option that meets your needs.
Here’s what we recommend you consider:
Material: Sisal carpets are made from the natural fibres of the agave sisalana plant, while seagrass carpets are made from the grass-like plants found in coastal areas. Sisal fibres tend to be coarser and stiffer, while seagrass fibres are softer and smoother.
Durability: Both sisal and seagrass are known for their durability. However, sisal is generally considered to be more robust and resilient, making it better suited for high-traffic areas. Seagrass carpets are also durable but may be more prone to staining and fading over time.
Moisture resistance: Seagrass carpets have natural water-resistant properties, making them a suitable choice for areas prone to spills or high humidity. Sisal carpets, on the other hand, are more absorbent and may not be as resistant to moisture. It's important to consider the specific location and usage of the floor when assessing moisture resistance.
Texture and feel: Sisal carpets have a rougher texture compared to seagrass, which have a smoother and softer feel underfoot. The texture and feel of the carpet can be a personal preference, so it's worth considering which one aligns with your comfort preferences.
Appearance: Sisal carpets often have a natural beige or tan colour, which can complement a variety of interior design styles. Seagrass carpets typically have a lighter and more varied colour tone, ranging from light green to golden brown. The choice between the two depends on the aesthetic you desire for your space.
Allergies and sensitivities: Both sisal and seagrass are generally considered hypoallergenic and suitable for individuals with allergies or sensitivities. However, it's important to note that individual reactions can vary, so it's advisable to test your sensitivity to these natural fibres before making a final decision.

Sisal rugs are known for their durability and longevity. With proper care and maintenance, a well-made sisal rug can last anywhere from 5 to 25 years or even longer. However, the lifespan of a sisal rug can vary depending on several factors:
Quality: The quality of the sisal rug plays a significant role in its lifespan. Higher-quality sisal rugs, which are made from tightly woven and properly processed fibres, tend to be more durable and can last longer compared to lower-quality rugs.
Usage: The amount of foot traffic the sisal rug experiences will impact its lifespan. Sisal is naturally sturdy, but excessive wear and tear can still affect its longevity. Placing the rug in high-traffic areas or using it in commercial settings may result in a shorter lifespan compared to rugs in low-traffic residential areas.
Maintenance: Proper care and maintenance can extend the lifespan of a sisal rug. Regular vacuuming, spot cleaning spills promptly, and avoiding exposure to excessive moisture are essential for preserving its condition. Additionally, rotating the rug periodically can help distribute wear evenly.
Environmental factors: Exposure to direct sunlight, high humidity, or extreme temperature variations can affect the lifespan of a sisal rug. Sunlight can cause fading and discolouration, while excessive moisture can lead to mould or mildew growth. Placing the rug in areas where it is shielded from direct sunlight and maintaining a suitable indoor environment can help prolong its lifespan.
Pets and children: If you have pets or young children, their activities can impact the longevity of a sisal rug. The family cat or dog’s claws and children's play can cause more wear and tear on the rug's fibres. Taking precautions or using rug protectors in areas where pets or children spend a lot of time can help preserve the rug's condition.

Moths are generally attracted to natural fibres, including wool, silk, and cashmere, rather than sisal. Sisal carpets, made from agave sisalana plant fibres, are less appealing to moths compared to materials like wool or silk. In short, sisal fibres have a rough texture and lack the organic matter that moths are typically drawn to - so you won’t be facing an influx of unwanted moths in your Sunshine Coast home.
However, it's important to note that while moths are less likely to target sisal carpets, they can still be attracted to the dirt and debris that accumulate on the surface. Regular cleaning and maintenance of your sisal carpet, such as vacuuming and removing any food particles or spills promptly, can help prevent the buildup of substances that might attract moths.
-
Sisal carpets are not typically recommended for wet washing or deep cleaning methods like traditional cleaning. The natural fibres of sisal can be sensitive to moisture, and excessive water exposure may cause shrinkage, warping, or discolouration.
However, there are a few techniques you can use to clean and maintain a sisal carpet:
Regular Vacuuming: Vacuum your sisal carpet regularly to remove loose dirt, dust, and debris. Use a vacuum cleaner with a brush attachment or a suction-only setting to avoid damaging the fibres.
Spot Cleaning: If there are spills or stains on your sisal carpet, it's important to address them promptly. Blot the affected area with a clean, dry cloth or paper towel to absorb as much liquid as possible. Avoid rubbing, as it may spread the stain. For dry stains, you can gently scrape them off with a dull knife or a spoon. Be careful not to scrub or use harsh cleaning agents, as they can damage the fibres.
Dry Powder Cleaning: You can occasionally use dry cleaning powders specifically designed for natural fibre, including sisal. These powders are sprinkled onto the carpet, allowed to sit for a specified time, and then vacuumed off. Follow the instructions provided by the manufacturer for proper usage.
Professional Cleaning: For deep cleaning or stubborn stains on a sisal carpet, it's advisable to seek professional cleaning services. Professional cleaners have specialised equipment and knowledge to clean natural fibre effectively while minimising moisture exposure.

“Coverings Noosaville have taken their business to a new level. Its a fantastic experience to visit their showroom. Most Coverings Showrooms look like they have come from the mid century and are typically bleak and unimaginative. The products displayed are very appealing. Systems are app driven and sleek. Messaging and a smooth process is top class. Rate the team very highly“
