WHY CHOOSE ENGINEERED TIMBER
Engineered Timber.. it's a bit of a buzzword these days but what exactly is it? And how do we know if it suits our renovating needs?
First let's take a walk down memory lane.. it used to be that when a house was built, the structure would have solid timber planks directly laid onto joists. This slowly changed into having concrete laid down, which is how most houses are made today and from there you could lay carpet, vinyl or tiles. However like a fine Chanel suit, classical wooden planks have come back in fashion, only with the rise of research and technology they are back 2.0.
So what is it?
Engineered timber is exactly that, timber which has been engineered to house the best of wooden planks and take out the worst. It is an all natural product that normally has two or more wooden layers bonded together with heat and pressure. This creates the top layers and is the layer that is visible, they can come in a variety of finishes, grains and wood types. These wooden layers are interspersed with a dense fibreboard core which give them their strength and durability.
Why is it better than solid planks?
While solid planks do have a great classical look about them they come with an array of issues. They are easily scratched, which makes homes with pets a nightmare and they are weather sensitive, swelling in the heat and shrinking in the dry cold. Engineered timber has been specifically created to combat these issues whilst still giving a classic wooden flooring feel. They are not only strong and durable, but handle spills, pets and heavy foot traffic better. They also have better acoustic qualities making them great for apartments and multi level homes and handle weather changes better too, with minimal swelling and shrinkage. They can also be sanded back and re-polished a few times within their lifetime.
Is it right for me?
When deciding on a flooring solution it is important to consider all your needs and wants. Engineered timber flooring is a great option for a classical, natural yet durable floor at a fraction of the cost of solid timber planks.
