The two main types of awnings are fixed and retractable.
Fixed Awnings
Fixed awnings are stationary and securely fixed to a building, there are two main types to choose from:
Louvre
Louvres are made from either aluminium or polycarbonate materials, they are fitted in front of a window or on the side of an outdoor area to provide extra protection. They can come with either fixed blades or blades that can be opened and closed as desired. Louvres are great for combining privacy as well as weather protection with options to choose your preferred light filtering.
Patio
The patio awning is as the name suggests, great for patio's, verandah's and outdoor decks. It has a robust understructure making at an ideal compliment for any large outdoor area but can also be made smaller for the individual windows of a house or over exposed doors. They also come in fabric options.
Retractable Awnings
Retractable awnings are fixed to the side of a house but can move to an angled position or put away completely giving the home more light and weather protection options depending on the time of day or season, there are three main types:
Folding Arm Awnings
A folding arm awning is made up of two or more arms, a front bar and the fabric. It allows for the awning to move to the right angle for the desired coverage. These are the most popular types of awnings for both residential and commercial properties due to their flexibility and that they can cover a large area without needing extra external supports.
Pivot Arm Awning
A pivot arm awning is used over window openings to provide extra shade and privacy. It has an arm that shifts the fabric either up or outward and down.
Vertical Screen
Otherwise known as a Zipscreen. These are retractable blinds that are mounted vertically to allow the home a choice of extra coverage if needed. They are great for an indoor/outdoor living spaces to offer protection from the elements without blocking the view. They can come with motorisation and weather sensors allowing them to retract or expand when necessary.
When deciding on the right awning it is important to take into consideration the needs of the space. How much and what type of weather will it be facing? Are you near to a beach or in a highly humid area? All this will need to be considered to select the right material and therefore the right type of awning for your chosen outcome.
